We will be diving the Nene Cut, this is a fantastic opportunity to brush the COVI 19 cobwebs away, trialing our new boats and kit. As well as searching for artifacts.

PROJECT  - SS Norhilda - 5 Miles SW Scarborough (2021)

One of our group is a descendant of the skipper of the NORHILDIA., Capt. Daniel Owen Evans, was born in 1886 in the tiny Welsh coastal village of Cei Newydd, some 23 miles south of Aberystwyth.

At the age of 12 he left to join the sailing ship Carnedd Llewelyn on a voyage of over a year which including sailing round Cape Horn, but then transferred to steamships. At the start of WW1 he was crossing the Atlantic in convoys, but in December 1915 he was First Officer on the SS El Zorro when she was torpedoed by U-24 some 10 miles off the Southern Irish coast whilst sailing from Texas to Dartmouth.

He then gained his Extra Master Certificate and took command of the SS Norhilda, a coal boat sailing between the Tyne and Harwich. On 21 August 1917, while returning to the Tyne in ballast, she was torpedoed by a U boat just off Scarborough and sank within 15 minutes. Forced to abandon ship, the crew were left floating in the sea for some 30 minutes with only bits of flotsam before being rescued.

PROJECT - Landing at Westkapelle (operation Infatuate II) (Date TBC)

This Project is at research stage

November 1944 - The attack on Westkapelle called for three troops of No. 41 Royal Marine Commando, to land on the north shoulder of the gap with the objective of clearing the area between the  dyke and the village of Westkapelle.

The remainder of the Commandos, along with the two No. 10 Commando troops, would then come ashore from Landing Craft Tanks (LCTs). Their mission would be to clear Westkapelle and then move north. Several landing craft were hit including a rocket LCT which received a direct hit

PROJECT - Sir Peter Scott Lighthouse - River Nene (Sept 2020)

Built in 1830 at Sutton Bridge, the lighthouse was an essential part of navigation for the new river Nene cutting. In 1933 this small lighthouse was to become home to the artist, the 24-year-old Peter Scott, son of the famous but ill-fated Captain Scott of the Antarctic.
